A woman says she was horrified after opening a carton of juice bought from Aldi – only to find it was full of black rotting mould.
Sutay Ndow bought the 59p carton of pineapple juice and was disgusted on first sip.
Aldi has apologised to the student after she complained.
Sutay threw the rest of the contents into the sink, only to discover it had gone off.
And she said she was further disappointed after Aldi offered her only a £20 voucher.
The law student said: “After shopping, I took the carton into my room and opened it up to take a sip, as I was the only one drinking from it.
“It was dark in my room as I was settling down for the night and it tasted absolutely disgusting, all I could taste was mould.
“I flicked on the lightswitch and saw that the lid where I had placed my lips was black.
“That’s when I freaked out and ran into the kitchen.
“I showed it to my housemates who said to pour it into the sink to have a look.
“I’m just glad I didn’t drink a lot of it because it could have made me really sick.”
The Birmingham City University student, who works part time in a shoe store, said she was annoyed when Aldi told her it had “happened before” and offered her a £20 voucher.
Sutay continued: “I wasn’t expecting a lot because it is Aldi and I’d read comments after I looked into it from people before about they’d only been offered £10 after a similar experience.
“But I am really annoyed and disappointed about it.
“It could have made me very, very sick, which would have interrupted my studies and meant I wouldn’t have been able to work.
“And they said it had happened before so they are clearly not doing anything about it.
“I definitely think it will be Lidl for me from now on.”
Aldi said sorry to Sutay today, with a spokesman saying: “Although very rare, incidents like this can occasionally occur if packaging is damaged at any point before the product is consumed, as the contents may be exposed to air.
“We have apologised to Ms Ndow that, on this occasion, this product didn’t meet our usual high quality standards.”
